What is Gastroesophageal reflux (GORD)?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) occurs when there is a weakening of the oesophageal sphincter causing stomach acid and contents to flow back upwards causing uncomfortable symptoms and complications. This common condition may be asymptomatic and progress to laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and lung aspiration of refluxate.

What is a gastroesophageal reflux study (GORD)?

Developed by our Nuclear Medicine Physician, Dr Hans van der Wall, this test is non-invasive, has a very low radiation dose and is an effective screening tool for not only detecting reflux of stomach and oesophagus but also pharyngeal contamination, maxillary sinuses, middle ears, throat, airways and lung aspiration in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. It accurately detects the presence and determines the extent and severity of GORD.

Dr Hans Van der Wall has developed a patented software to effectively indicate the severity of the GORD and the likely outcome of laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery with the intention to almost negate the risk of unsuccessful surgery.
